As moronic as it is, it's a bit unrealistic to just hope that the knuckle draggers somehow come to that conclusion too. Particularly when they are targeted by far-right groups (there were reports of a group trying to recruit outside Ibrox recently, although I can't find anything on it at the moment) and the like who are literally just exploiting those who are susceptible to being strung along by these groups. Football is a particularly fertile breeding ground for such things, due to the fans nature to stick together and want to agree on all things. Many football fans simply have no other hobbies. It might seem like a miserable existence to you or me but to that person football (and the fallout) will be about as important a thing as they know. So if all their mates then start to say or do one thing, they are very likely to just go with the flow and copy their mates behaviour, so as not to be shunned from the only group of friends they have in life. Some of them will need to turn a blind eye to their conscience, but it will seem worth it in order to continue their social lives and keep the only friends they have ever had. Or (and more likely I think), they will simply have zero understanding of any of the things they sing about. They either won't have the mental capacity to grasp the ins and outs of a given social or political situation, or will have simply never even tried to learn about anything related. "Aw a care aboot is ma team winnin" is often how these people defend their lack of worldly knowledge. It's exactly how these people end up being the loudest fans, and end up thinking they speak for the whole support when they spew their bile, the Dunning-Kruger effect in full swing. They need educated more than anything else. Maybe the schools could do a better job, but these people aren't gonna teach themselves any different from what they currently know, especially not when they have been convinced by right wingers amongst them that they do have a legitimate reason to be anti-catholic or whatever, and it is in fact patriotic and a great display of loyalty to their nation to act as such. We can see how ridiculous it is, but you just need to see how seriously a lot of people take that kinda stuff to see that it really is pretty ingrained in our society, in the west of Scotland anyway.
