> the prospect of getting my cunt kicked in if I express my support of the wrong side to the wrong people

This is by far the biggest myth going. I've never once hid what team I support in 30+ years in Glasgow, and I've literally never once been in any trouble. Might get the odd comment from a Celtic fan if I'm in a Rangers scarf or whatever but it's nearly always either meant as a joke or it's someone just making a wee comment rather than being aggressive or confrontational. It really just adds to the fun. Even if you do come across a bitter bigot somewhere they tend not to do anything other than make snide comments, making themselves look utterly pathetic in the process, and these sorts can be easily ignored and avoided if need be.

Granted I can only speak for being in Glasgow. I wouldn't want to walk about [Larkhall](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/scottish-town-where-green-is-beyond-the-pale-981747.html) in a Celtic top, for example. But then, as I'm not from Larkhall, I might just be making the same assumptions of inevitable sectarian violence that you are about Glasgow.

> Like I feel completely locked out of this huge part of the culture.

If you were to pick a side and try to get involved I'm 100% sure whatever teams fans it was would welcome you with open arms. Back when I worked in jobs with a lot of international students I used to take people to their first game at Ibrox regularly, and they all seemed to love it every time.

So just please don't feel locked out, if you want to pick a team then you absolutely should, it's the best league in the world (maybe not in quality, but it hasn't been completely ruined by money and greed yet, plus the passion and general hilarity surrounding it are second to none) and the majority of Scottish football fans will only be too happy to have a fellow Scottish football fan on board, no matter what team it is.

We all do love to hate each other though, the slagging matches between fans are almost as important as the actual football matches, but deep down we do still like and appreciate each other at the end of the day. Typically your more bigoted fans don't even engage in these back and forths with other teams fans, they tend to just keep the hatred amongst themselves until it occasionally bubbles over and there is a wee outburst somewhere that makes the news, but generally they aren't much to worry about, other than the disrepute they bring to both the game and the city.
