In terms of portfolios, they are looking for a variety of things that show creativity, imagination, experimentation risk taking and (some) skill. (They teach the skills so skill isn't the most important). I'm taking a guess here but it sounds like you're slightly more inclined toward fashion but I think it's very good that you are interested in both fields. There's nothing more boring than a fashion student who only knows about fashion.

Next steps: go to the open days at GSA and Dundee. I can vouch for fine art at both and fashion at GSA. Grill the students about what it's like to study there. If you're in S4 you are already ahead of the game. You also need to get some extra curricular experience outwith school.

In terms of your background, I was literally having dinner tonight with a pal who grew up on a scheme in Glasgow in a single parent family. They also went to GSA and are doing very well indeed now. There's no doubt that you are going to have to work harder than the poshos/rich kids. They will have a mind bending amount of self confidence that you can't even imagine but no one is impoverished if they are cultured. At the risk of repeating my earlier chat about sketch books, steep yourself in creative culture. Music, art and design are all deeply connected. Then there's literature and film... learn the difference between Halston, Hemmingway and Haring.
