Before you look into it, are you sure the drive just isn’t being mounted (given a drive letter and then shown in Windows explorer). Can happen for a variety of reasons. I’ve had a lot of folk encounter this problem over the years who thought the drive was broken.

Open up Disk Manager, and make a note of any drives that are displayed. Then connect your external SSD. If it then appears then changes are good you can just mount it and assign a drive letter by following the instructions below…

To mount a drive in an empty folder by using the Windows interface

In Disk Manager, right-click the partition or volume that has the folder in which you want to mount the drive.
Click Change Drive Letter and Paths and then click Add.
Click Mount in the following empty NTFS folder.
Type the path to an empty folder on an NTFS volume, or click Browse to locate it.
