I think it's because in my mind the term "junkie" is always associated with people with drug addiction who have similar mannerisms, ways of speaking and paint a very specific painting in regards to the ones you often see in Glasgow referred to as such. So I figured more people would get what I meant instead of saying "drug addict" as that can also mean (for example) people who just smoke weed, who don't often have that particular way of speech. Whereas with "junkie" people instantly know what you're referring to.
