I worked in Lidl as a student so altogether not too different.

Getting stuck on 'first till' (i.e. You are the til that's always open) gets very boring, very very quickly.

Working the shop floor is better - doing the restock etc.

You also need to go about towards the end of your shift doing the 'rack down' (i.e. Tidying the shelves, chucking away empty boxes etc). A manager usually does the write offs too for out of date food.

All-in-all, its a steady job. Pay is decent and you're not faced with unsociable hospitality hours. If you're on a close at a 10pm shop it would be very rare to be out later than 11. On the other hand, the amount of company rules you have to follow feels a bit over the top. I get that they have to make money somehow but getting moaned at because shoplifting is on the up, or because we haven't completed some random procedures.

Edit: I should also add, a manager started at the same time as me and completely struggled with the demands. One day, he walked out of the shop half way through his shift and never came back. Personally, I thought he just didn't handle stress very well, but I have no idea what was expected of him. I think he was overwhelmed by the amount of stuff he had to learn and he was also on a 47.5h contract. Other managers all seemed to enjoy the work.
