Comment | My understanding was that a "square go" was a fair fight, man on man, with no sneak attacks or trickery.
To use an example from my days in high school - someone jumped their opponent from behind in a corridor, and got a few good punches in whilst they had the element of surprise, essentially enough to win the fight.
"Aye, but you couldn't take him in a square go" was the verdict.

Often someone would offer a square go but have their pals jump in to assist if the fight wasn't going their way. |
