Your outfit choice is fine for pubs and the more casual sort of bar. Some of the snootier nightclubs might have a dress code. Fortunately the area around the uni is crawling with that kind of place.

Lot of students live in the vicinity of Byers Road which is close to the uni and close to all the bars and takeaway places. I personally lived in Finnieston for a couple of years which is walking distance to the uni and to the city centre, and I found it a nice place to live all round.

Final point - Canadian and Scottish culture are similar enough that you won't experience that much culture shock. Golden rule is not to be a twat and everyone will like you fine. Also "Cunt" is not considered a serious curse here and is dropped quite casually. Depending on the tone and inflection it may even be used as a term of endearment. "This Cunt" is bad, while "Good Cunt" is among the highest praise you can receive from a Scotsman.
