Architecture is fundamentally different from every other piece of artistic expression because it directly affects our built environment. If you hate modern art, or slam poetry, or whatever you can just ignore it. But awful architecture cannot be avoided, only mitigated. There's the famous story of the French writer de Maupassant, who so hated the Eiffel tower that he ate in its restaurant almost every day; when asked why he said that it was the only table in Paris from which the tower could not be seen.
Architects have no right to impose their elitist preferences on everyone else. Forcing people to exist in spaces they find ugly is actively malevolent.
