Some groups do consider it sectarian these days.

You have ofcom who say it’s not offensive.

The courts have provided a not proven verdict on somebody being charged for a breach aggravated by religious prejudice. That must be about 10-15 years ago now.

People have been prosecuted under section 38 for their behaviour while using the word hun. Not necessarily the word itself.

If you think about how the use of the word has evolved. Mainly a term used to describe Rangers fans in the past you would say? But these days Hearts fans get called huns. I’ve seen groups of unionists called huns on this very forum and elsewhere even though their football allegiances are not on display.

So the next time it goes to court, that previous not proven might turn into a guilty if a lawyer convinces the court it was used in such in such a manner, as the word is applied beyond a footballing divide and into the political and possibly religious spectrum.
