I think a mixture of both is the sweet spot.

My old commute home involved crawling through the west end in bumper to bumper traffic. One day I got a taxi home, and as soon as we hit the wall to wall traffic the driver started making a few turns and ducking in and out of some side streets that I would have never thought of, and the sat nav would never direct me down.

The end result was negotiating a few extra turns and junctions but cutting out a lot of time sitting in traffic.
