I tend to find that long distance train tickets are inaccurate. I went to Newcastle for a holiday last year with my gf via bus and the plan was to take the bus back to Glasgow but there was a huge storm ravaging the east coast so the buses got cancelled and we had to go via train.

On the Scotrail app it said it would have cost £70+ for a train ticket back but ended up only being £10 for the first train to Carlisle and free from Carlisle to Glasgow. It would have all been free if we had known we didn't need a ticket to board the first train because no ticket inspector was going to inspect everyone on a literally jam packed shoulder to shoulder train ride.
