Like others are saying, get your job to pay for this. But if that's somehow not possible: with train tickets, what you see is what you can get. Maximum (off-peak/anytime) prices are fixed annually by the government and there's no evil algorithm personalising them. Anything below that is simply because you got there in time for an advance ticket. If you're still paranoid, you can use any number of websites to check prices - Avanti, other operators, National Rail, and then third-party websites some of which will also do split fares, allowing you to maybe save a few quid.

Other than that, try to figure out exactly when advance tickets are being released for your route (I'm not sure if that's all at the same time), and jump the moment that happens - and keep in mind you're not the only one doing that.
