There's definitely places out of the city that are worth having a car for (I mean, the Highlands are a stone's throw away by US standards) but as a guy who used to work in car insurance I would absolutely recommend against importing. Finding insurance for a US import is gonna be time-consuming and expensive. I've driven across the pond a few times, trust me, you get used to driving from the passenger seat pretty fast. The hard part is changing back after you've been doing it for a while.
