The payment you made should in theory have a UTRN on the purchase. Its a 19(?) digit number. You can physically type this into the meter itself and it should give you the £40.

It sounds like a couple of things could have happened (there are possibly more but these would be my 2 bets) :
1) there system has went down causing all meters to reset- you \*should\* be in friendly credit and not have to worry about it until the morning though at about 8ish your power might go out. << this is the most likely scenario
2) you've been moved out the property by mistake and its reset the meter < this is unlike as the reset normally takes place at mid night |
