It's not throwing money away if the monthly cost in transport is less than the money you save in rent by living further away.

For example, a monthly pass for the subway is about £50, whereas the difference in rental prices between different areas served by the subway is more like £200-300/month.

Regardless, £400pcm including bills isn't going to happen anywhere in the city.
