As much as you can help it, neither a borrower nor a lender be. When tapping anybody money, especially friends and family, you are better to consider it gone if they don't return it. Even £500 is not worth the grief and stress, you're better off cutting your loss. There are ways you can turn the screws and apply some pressure to get your money back, but you don't seem like that sort of person, so I would just cut your losses.
