I wouldn’t be too upset with the son. Huntington’s is a hereditary disease that usually gets worse in each generation. He may not be ready to deal with the fact that with a 50% chance he’s looking at his own fate. That’s difficult at any age, but really hard in your early twenties when you’re just about to start your life.

Maybe he’s been tested and already knows whether he’ll get the disease or not, but chances are he hasn’t come this far yet.

The disease will affect your neighbour’s cognition and at some point she will no longer be able to make her own decisions. I don’t know what the procedure is when people lose the mental capacity to make their own decisions and care for themselves, but I suspect the Huntington’s charities mentioned above will be able to help.
