My experience has been that the Gay™ Scene (i.e. Merchant City) is pretty shite all things considered. Same identikit commercial trash as you get in any major city. Never had a good time there myself but I'm sure some do.
But if you look for explicitly *queer* venues and events you'll have a much better time of things.
