Grew up there so I'm a bit out of date, but: it's a pretty small place, but very pretty.

The university campus is pretty spectacular, a couple of miles out of town.

Rental prices are about the same as the other urban areas in Scotland, don't know if I'd call that "cheap" exactly... but it's not super expensive either.

Stirling itself has the usual range of shops, and a mainstream cinema. The university has an arts cinema.

Good pubs but pretty crap nightlife, it's just not a big place.

You are also only 40 minutes on the train from Glasgow and Edinburgh, both of which have all the amenities you would expect in a major city - cinemas of all sizes, nightclubs, etc.
