| Comment | I was there 10 years ago, and was in halls, and that felt like the norm for first years. I loved it and made friends I'm still pals with today, but hearing the nightly parties around the street got old after a few months. We met a few folk in private halls, who iirc didn't rate it for sociability but they seemed to make friends easily if they were prepared to get themselves out to events and clubs etc even if they had to go solo initially.
My brother went private in first year in another city, and he always seemed to get unlucky with his flatmates. I dunno if it was because the kind of person to choose private halls tended to be less social/more difficult, or if he just had bad luck, or if he was too shy.
