Unless you're being sponsored in your PhD by a company or organisation who is committing to employ you at the end, please, please, please do not allow yourself to believe that a PhD in a science subject is a ticket to employment when you graduate. The job market for science and tech postgraduates can be extremely competitive and it is not at all uncommon for people with advanced degrees in "highly desirable" fields to struggle to find permanent employment after graduation. Sadly too many people make the assumption that "PhD means highly qualified therefore super-employable".

Doing a PhD alone will absolutely not be taken by a bank as a guarantee of long term income over a mortgage repayment period.
