I had big issues with this tbh. Had a mortgage broker at Slater, Hogg & Howison on Byres Rd help us, called Clare. She was great.

Some places actually categorised me as a dependent for my spouse (along with our kids) and adjusted what they could borrow downwards due to having to pay for me, even though I had £1,200+ come in each month set for another 3 years. Am now nearer end of my PhD and realise that before the passing of 1st year annual performance review one is (potentially) at risk of getting ejected... Don’t think the banks think like that but it definitely isn’t considered a solid “real” income in the U.K. - different to elsewhere in Europe for example where being a PhD student is actually a job (with employment contract plus associated rights).

But TSB doesn’t make me a dependent. The income doesn’t count towards the loan tho.

Note: we’d already bought before I changed to be a PhD student so it was a remortgage situation
