Sometimes in old houses there's wooden panelling over the walls to the sides of windows (like in the first two pics at [https://www.preservationwindows.com/sash-window-gallery](https://www.preservationwindows.com/sash-window-gallery))
These could be wooden shutters that have been folded back into their storage recess and painted shut, or they could just be ornamental wall paneling. Start digging around the edges of the paintwork and find out ;)
If there are visible hinges down one edge, you're probably in luck!
