Rothesay can be a nice day trip as well. You get there by train to wemyss bay and then the ferry, and the castle is just next to it.


Bute has pretty nice bus system, so you can then get a bus to Mount Stuart House, or to the beach (ettrick bay is great) or, if you fancy some walk, as I am not sure you can get there by bus, Saint Blane's chapel, a nice ruins of a chapel and a monastery.


There is also Newark Castle in Port Glasgow, the surrundings are crap, but the castle itself might be nice (never been inside). Or there is a dumbarton castle as well on the opposite side of Clyde, nicely tucked under the big rock...
