I moved from a scummy wee town on the deep west coast to Edinburgh for a job in a big bank when I was like 20 and immediately encountered this problem, not only speaking to edinburgers but to English customers on the phone. It was rough but basically after like a year I became very adept at pronouncing stuff properly, knowing what consonants and vowels to pronounce so that people could understand me. Wish it wasn’t that way, although people call the way we speak “slang,” you can actually call it Scot’s (as most of it is Scot’s words) which is considered by linguists a language, but it’s just the way it is unfortunately.
