Had the exact same experience. Outside we could do what we wanted but inside we spoke “properly”. And I do the same with my kids.
My mum used to say that you never know if you’ll have to live/work in a foreign country and that’s exactly what I did for a while and everyone could understand me.
When you’re used to doing both it’s very easy to adapt
