While your point makes sense from a self protection point of view, I've been to cities in Europe (e.g. Munster) where pedestrians don't even look when crossing at roundabouts because the system is cars always give way.
That's what we want to achieve, a system of respect for other road users, but somehow seems impossible in the UK
