I was going to suggest the M77 too. You can head out through Shawlands and Giffnock, and join the M77 at the Newton Mearns roundabout which will be quieter than heading over the Kingston Bridge.
As your confidence grows, join it earlier, at junctions closer to town.
The road down to Cumbria is a breeze, once you’re off the M8 or M74.
