Maybe a year or two before the pandemic Govanhill started going through some drastic changes. I’ve always been a champion for this area. I’ve got family connections here dating back to the 80s so it’s always felt like home to me. I moved back 2014 for uni and was always mystified why an area with great transport links and a lovely park was so undervalued.

There are elements I like such as young teams no longer having free reign over the place. But the people moving in aren’t half as social as what they think. The Scottish folk in my close chat to each other and have a laugh but the new folk moving in are a bit stand offish and only socialise with people who sound like them. It leads to minor divisions.

If I was been cynical I’d say there is a conscious effort to drive the working classes out of this area, the pubs and cafes are all shooting up in prices and for the wee business that’s been there for a generation is closer to be replaced by another artisan cafe.

It’s not all bad. It’s not all good. But I do often feel like a stranger in my area. It’s obviously not mine anymore and I guess that’s just life.
