In Scotland, by law almost all private residential tenancies (purpose-built student accommodation is an exception to this) are open-ended. This means that all you need to do is give 28 days notice when you're planning on moving out - you don't need to commit to a year long lease. Now a landlord/letting agency might not be too happy if you rock up and say you'll just be staying there for 3/4 months, but legally all you have to give is one month's notice...

There's also sites like spareroom for people that are looking for flatmates within an existing property. This might be a slightly easier solution, since it means you won't have to deal with the hassle of setting up utilities/wifi/other bills, especially if you're coming from outside the UK(?)
