1. The UK is expensive to live in, period
1. Average UK wage is an Internet search away (it's £~30k)
1. Supper costs under £8. Dinner, fine dining, is £100+pp. A normal dinner will be £25pp. You can cook a meal at home for £2pp with ease.
1. A 5 star hotel would run you £150+pn 20 years ago (in Birmingham of all places), you can get quality lodgings for a lot less than that

You've probably being getting bled dry in the tourist traps.

A quick glance at Canuck prices shows them to be on par, or worse, than Scotland. Montreal was eye-watering when I was there.
