Universities don't generally make money - at best they don't go too far into the red, funding sources permitting. I agree that increasing student numbers without an appropriately corresponding increase in space and resources is not only ethically questionable but problematic in the long term as it impacts student satisfaction (and thus NSS scores).

Several HE institutes are dealing with the space/resources issue and operating at or someone's beyond capacity. (Source: am HE lecturer).

The Mitchell library isn't too far from you, and is a great place to study/revise. It gets a bit busier spring/summer but there's usually setup space on one of the floors. I often wonder why more people don't use it.
