I looked into this recently. I was having a debate with my brother and I looked into the definitions.

Cambridge dictionary

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/middle-class

"a social group that consists of well-educated people, such as doctors, lawyers, and teachers, who have good jobs and are not poor, but are not very rich"

Investopedia

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/m/middle-class.asp

"The word "middle" may be misleadingĀ in thatĀ it suggests that those in the middle class have earnings within the middle of the population's income distribution, which may not be the case. Middle class families tend to own their own home (although with a mortgage), own a car (although with a loan or lease), send their kids to college (although with student loans or scholarships), are saving for retirement, and have enough disposable savings to afford certain luxuries like dining out and vacations"

The Investopedia definition had me laughing with the luxuries of "vacations" and "Dining out" seems a bit out of date.

It's hard to define. My partner and I have a joint income of into the six figures, we go on holiday. Have a mortgage and finance cars.

But we definitely don't feel middle class. But some would think so based on income/lifestyle.

Neither of us are educated beyond some college HND's so well educated is ruled out in my opinion.
