I did the math and with cost of commute and time wasted on it, it did not make sense for me to move further and have 200-300 less mortgage every month. Especially when 2 people have to commute. Not to mention time and cost spent on driving everywhere. I bought in the west end, everything is close, my wife walks to her work, I sometimes take subway to my work. I have 8 years old car and spent 40 quid a month on petrol. I would likely need 2 cars if I had moved far away. At least with bigger mortgage you pay off more expensive house rather than waste money on commute.

Of course this all depends on circumstances but I just couldn't imagine moving away and be a slave to cars and disaster of scot rail.

I had friends that moved to Strathaven. They paid only slightly less for 4 bed semi than I have for 3 bed flat on West End of the same square footage. But they have to drive everywhere, Glasgow is over 40min by car almost 2hrs by public transport (no rail station there). Yes, it's nice to have a garden but I also have very nice shared garden with BBQ area and thats enough for me.
