The 50k income person is paying 40% income tax on the last ~7000 of their salary though. The two 25k people are each paying 20%. The single person gets a 25% discount on council tax so pays more proportionately than any adult living with another paying adult. They have one annual leave entitlement so likely to have to pay for additional childcare when a couple can take turns. The house is getting heated, dishes, cooking and laundry done anyway so an extra adult in the house doesn't make a huge difference to gas and electricity cost, and it's more expensive to buy food in small packages that can be used up before going off so again proportionately more expensive, though if you know how and can afford a big freezer to fit bread etc you can offset that.

Anyway this is probably more getting into territory of everyone struggling these days. I am tending to agree with those who say middle class is about way more than how much you make. Where you live, how you speak, your hobbies, the food you eat.
