It'll depend entirely on who you read! If you read Marx, he viewed he called the "smaller capitalists" if I remember rightly, and they were people like shopkeepers (your corner shop shopkeepers sort of folks) and artisans who work for themselves. From a Marxist perspective, he would say that those folks are all the working class because they aren't literally capitalists. But, certainly, people in those types of jobs tend to not view themselves as working class. I'm an accountant and I honestly think that view is a big reason why there is no union for people in my job. Because most people who do my job (auditor in a Big 4 firm) have aspirations of climbing in the corporate ladder, being upper/senior management, and, to be blunt, are often coming from privileged backgrounds to begin with.
