Maybe not as relevant as some of the other comments, but there's my 5 cents:

I have a degree in planning and started working for one of the UK charities. Spent 3 years working for them and started learning code on my own after work and on weekends. Took just short of 2 years of home learning and practice to land my first job in IT. I guess I could do it a bit faster, but I wanted to transition into fairly niche part of IT, so took me a bit longer to get the grip of all the pieces of the puzzle. Plus I really didn't do some insane strict learning schedule. If I felt like having a week off, I had a week off. But generally speaking tried to work in 'concentrated blocks' of 2-3 months.

I would start a project that would take me 2-3 months to complete. During that time I would try to put in 10-15 hours of work per week. After I finished the project, I would take 2 months off, then do another project. Not the most efficient way to do it, I know - but that is what worked for me. I simply need some time to enjoy and do whatever I want in between.

Hope this helps at least a bit.
