Unless your table is solid wood it will be a very thin veneer over some engineered wood product like MDF, particleboard or plywood.
If you are not experienced with refinishing you ~~could~~ will sand through that veneer in a heartbeat and there is no way to put it back. A metal scraper would be preferable to sanding but still not risk free, and then you have all the skill in adding the new finish.
Go to a Charity Shop, buy a cheap shitey side table and try to refinish it first before tackling something you actually care about.
