I think you've answered your own question: they're an opposition party, but they're in opposition to the SNP, a party with which they have more in common than not (at a domestic policy level). So you're left with a party used to being firmly on one side of a simple political axis not really being sure where they belong anymore.

The current focus on unionism is also in part due to Sarwar's leadership (he was a figurehead of the Better Together campaign)

As a member myself, the socialist/grassroots basis is still alive and well (and not lacking in pro-indys - see the Hollie Cameron debacle), it's really the leadership that is having an ongoing dissociative breakdown.
