They get a bit of extra money, but this is very far away from what the user pays. If the surge is x2, they don't get double. This extra money can be as little as 1$ (or pound). Uber doesnt take a percentage of the fare. Check the following picture, taken from a Uber driver:

You can get more information here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/uber/comments/na6ru3/are_uber_drivers_still_being_paid_for_surge_fares/

For example:

"The simple answer is to understand what riders see as a "surge" and what drivers see as a "surge" are disconnected. You may pay $10 more than usual, driver gets 5, or 2, or maybe nothing of that extra $10 you paid as a "surge".

Uber is not only the market maker, they are the market manipulator. Drivers have no input on pricing. "

"I had an Uber Premier trip for 6 miles where the passenger paid $100. I got a fixed $5 surge bonus and time and distance which came to a total of $20. Uber keeps the rest.

What a passenger pays and what the driver receive are not at all related.
