Comment | If you are looking for something near Glasgow Uni but not too expensive, I'd recommend Maryhill -- you can easily walk to campus (takes me \~30 minutes) and find decent flats. Woodlands used to be fairly cheap, if you were okay with living next to the M8, but that has changed since they built student halls there. If she is okay with the subway, you can look around Govan / Ibrox / Kinning Park on the south side, keeping in mind that you are never more than 15 minutes away from the farthest subway station in Glasgow.
As for areas to avoid, I'd say it's not so much a question of security than of quiet / hygiene (thinking rats in your backyard because the bins are not taken out regularly -- check that the interphone is working before you sign your lease). I've been here eight years and experienced much less street harassment and pick-pocketing attempts than in my three years just commuting between Paris and my parents' home when I was still a student there (then I might have been so used to what guys are capable of in France that the Glaswegian attempts at catcalling seem tame and shy in comparison!) |
