The trouble is if you prioritise cars then more people will drive, causing your peak demand to rise, meaning you think you need another road, causing more people to drive, causing your peak demand to rise...

What people don't realise is there is a hard limit in the form of the residential streets and city centre. Even if you put in more lanes on main roads, they still feed into a system you can't expand! Building more roads in response to city traffic is like not being able to fit 2l of water into a 1l bottle and deciding you need a bigger funnel.

A bus generates less emissions per passenger than any car idling, walking and cycling are emissions free.

Can you think of anything which might have happened in Japan around the beginning of the era of mass auto transport which might have made it easier for them to redesign their cities from scratch?
