You can purchase your ticket all of those ways.

If you want to buy in advance download the First Bus mTicket app.

Personally recommend using the tap on-tap off system where the cheapest fares for your journey will be calculated, and you will be charged accordingly. The tapping system has just recently went live in Glasgow because our public transport is in the stone-age compared to London, so some people still don’t know about this.

Bus, rail, and subway are all operated by different organisations (and in the case of buses, multiple bus companies, with First Bus being the main one.) There is a multi modal ticket available from SPT (the regional transport administrator), but if you’re planning to stay pretty central and not use rail then I’d recommend just using the bus tap on/off system and buy subway tickets in the station.
