| Comment | Just to echo what everyone else is saying. They can increase it by any amount they want to! I was in the same situation as you last year and was panicking because the going rates were a good £400-£500 above what we were paying at the time. Thankfully they did an inspection and only put it up by £25. I think our landlord is an older lady who uses our rent as extra income (mortgage is paid off I believe). My only advice is to make sure the place is cleaned to within an inch of its life, some landlords are just happy that you’re looking after the place which is what I think happened in our case.
To add to this, they can put it up by any amount but if it’s a stupidly high increase you can appeal it. This will only usually be successful if your new rent is miles above what anyone else is paying for a similar property in your area. |
