Just back from a resort in Mexico which had an Italian, Chinese, and French restaurant in it. I was served by Mexican waiters, the food was cooked by Mexican chefs and it was nothing like what would actually be served in Italy, China or France.

It is of course all designed to suit the tastes and expectations of the people who will be served in that establishment.

They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Some people fall in love with other cultures. It’s easy to understand why someone could become so inspired by Mexico. The country is beautiful, and the people are genuine, warm and proud. His interpretation may not be great, but I doubt they mean any offence. It happens the world over. People pick out parts of cultures and countries on how they see it.

The fake Irish and British pubs all over the world full of leprechauns and wonky fish and chips, that look nothing like real pubs in either country. They are simply theme bars.

If you opened up an authentic Mexican restaurant here it probably wouldn’t do well because authentic Mexican food is much more spicy than the average British tastebuds are acquired to. Every business adjusts for the local market. Even McDonalds.

If it’s such a big issue, go in and speak to the owner and find out what his story is. Where his inspiration comes from. Maybe you will leave with a better understanding of him, and maybe you will leave him with a better understanding on Mexican culture.
