I wouldn’t say that it’s civic narcissism.
It’s a city that has a past of punching above it’s weight. It may have been an industrial city but it was the Uk/Scottish birthplace of coffee houses, Theatres and Cinemas with only London having more of each through each era.

It’s not a fancy place but many have done alright out of it. And when we do have a cause celebre we celebrate them whether it’s fashionable or not.

For example David Dale, Mary Barbour, Mary Slessor or for modern era the big yin himself billy Connolly, Edwin Morgan, Kevin bridges or Karen Dunbar.

We are sentimental about those who do well because their lives are just like ours. They’ve not paid their way to titles nor inherited money. But they’ve all changed Scotland in their own way.

In an era where we have to constantly remind people to ‘be kind’. I think it’s revelatory that as Glaswegians we are warm hearted enough to wish the best for those who put themselves out there, who do well by others and lift the communities that they started life in.
