I’m not going to talk to you the way I talk to my mum. Your 1000s of people are talking to you in a polite way and probably mirroring your speech to an extent as that’s what good communicators do.

The lack of usage of Scots in your immediate vicinity could be down to historical religious leanings, burgeoning class anxiety or trends at your local schools.

And remember that language changes over time and in different areas. I would never ever say oxter but would comment on bird keech or blawin a hoolie.

Just because one phrase is missing in your commonalities doesn’t mean that people aren’t speaking Scots.
