I give the same advice for two problems, looking for friends and looking for work and that is volunteer.
It is rewarding in it's own right and it doesn't have to be about charity shops or abandoned pets. Two very worthy causes by the way. It puts you amongst mostly caring people and at the same time boosts your sense of self worth and nothing is more attractive in a friend or partner than confidence. I personally think you are more likely to find relationships when you are not actively looking for them, but the key prerequisite is you have to be regularly around a constant group of people for relationships to develop.
I have been online gaming for decades and whilst I have made good friendships and actually met my life partner there the relationships can be kind of intense then rapidly fade. Which kinda leaves you at square one.
