This is very sound advice - definitely check out the artists' portfolios and don't be afraid to have consultations before you commit, those are usually free.

Many will also be happy to just give you a stencil before you go for a full design so you can see of you like it or not - allow yourself the time, a good tattoo artist will not pressure you into getting it to make sure you're happy with the final result, and they will be happy to make changes and work with you on the design.

I went around town and just looked at all the shops I could find, then checked out their instagram pages or websites where they usually have profiles of the artists and narrowed down my choice based on whose style I liked. Then I contacted a few of the artists and went with the one that I felt understood best what I wanted.
